Overview of Visian ICL

EVO Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a vision correction procedure designed to reduce nearsightedness (myopia) and, with a toric lens, astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which reshapes the cornea, EVO ICL involves placing a biocompatible lens inside the eye, behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The procedure preserves the cornea's natural shape and may be an option for patients with higher prescriptions, thin corneas, or other factors that make laser vision correction less suitable.

Who Is a Good Candidate for EVO ICL?

EVO ICL is FDA-approved for adults ages 21 to 60 who meet specific vision and eye health requirements. Candidates typically have moderate to high myopia, with or without astigmatism.

Factors considered when determining eligibility include:

  • A stable vision prescription for at least one year.

  • Nearsightedness within the treatment range, generally between -3.00 and -20.00 diopters.

  • Adequate space inside the eye to safely accommodate the implanted lens.

  • Healthy corneal endothelial cells and suitable eye anatomy.

  • No disqualifying conditions, such as certain forms of glaucoma, or current pregnancy or breastfeeding.

A comprehensive eye examination, including detailed measurements of the eye, is necessary to determine whether EVO ICL is appropriate.

How Is EVO ICL Surgery Performed?

EVO ICL is an outpatient procedure that typically takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes per eye. Before surgery, numbing eye drops are administered to minimize discomfort. Mild sedation may also be offered.

The surgeon creates a small incision near the edge of the cornea and inserts the folded lens into the eye. The lens is then carefully positioned behind the iris, where it works with the natural lens to focus light more accurately onto the retina.

The EVO ICL design includes a central opening that allows fluid to circulate naturally within the eye, generally eliminating the need for the preliminary laser procedure required with earlier ICL models.

Recovery After EVO ICL Surgery

Patients must arrange transportation home after surgery. Many notice improved vision within the first 24 hours, although vision may continue to stabilize over the following days or weeks.

Temporary symptoms can include mild irritation, light sensitivity, and blurry vision. Patients receive postoperative eye drops and instructions to support healing and reduce the risk of complications.

Activities such as swimming, rubbing the eyes, and strenuous exercise may need to be avoided temporarily, depending on the surgeon's recommendations. Follow-up appointments are essential to monitor eye pressure, lens positioning, and healing. The surgeon typically examines the eyes the day after surgery and schedules additional visits as needed.

Benefits and Potential Risks of EVO ICL

One advantage of EVO ICL is that it can correct significant nearsightedness without removing corneal tissue. The implanted lens is designed to remain in place long-term but can be surgically removed or replaced when medically appropriate.

However, EVO ICL is still an intraocular surgical procedure and carries risks. Possible complications include increased eye pressure, inflammation, infection, cataract development, glare or halos, and changes in corneal endothelial cells. Some patients may require additional surgery.

The procedure also does not prevent age-related vision changes, including presbyopia, so reading glasses or other vision correction may still be necessary. Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, or significant worsening redness after surgery requires immediate medical evaluation.

Is EVO ICL Right for You?

EVO ICL may be an effective alternative for patients seeking greater independence from glasses or contact lenses, particularly those who are not ideal candidates for LASIK. Schedule a consultation with our team to determine whether EVO ICL is right for you based on your prescription, eye health, and visual needs. We can discuss your vision correction options, potential benefits, and surgical risks to help you make an informed decision.
